Art for me is inspiration — pure and
practiced and raw. With painting I find a
framework for wisdom, an embodiment of
the riches of cultural exchange.

I paint with oil on canvas in two ways —
in one I use
photographs as central visual cues
and in the other, I explore the quality
of the paint — its depth, hue and flexibility —
and follow its interaction with the canvas
to
reveal hidden elements.

Oil paint allows for depth and ambiguity
that enhances the intensity of a photograph,
whether it is one I have
found, one I have
composed
or a combination of the two.

The fluidity of oil also allows for magical and
intriguing interactions of paint, medium and
canvas. These paintings change drastically
from layer to layer. In some,
recognizable elements emerge and in others, the painting
retains its mystery.

While in painting, layers are added to
simulate depth, in stonecarving layers are
peeled away to reveal it.
Chiseling, rasping, sanding
slowly
reveal form and color in stone that
gives substance to inspiration.
The process is slow and intentional,
reminding that practice is an art in itself.

I use the surface of a painting, the contours
of a sculpture, to recognize moments, feelings,
memories begging to be expressed. It is my greatest hope that these explorations deepen social questions and propel active response.
